Physical Education

Physical Education Overview
Adopted April 2017


The goal of the Physical Education curriculum is to provide knowledge, skills, and experiences to promote physical activity now and for a lifetime. The curriculum is based on physical education standards for the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE).

The standards are broken into the following areas; motor skills and movement, physical activity and fitness, and personal social behavior. Each teacher designs different ways of having students learn the standards through activities, formal and informal games, and sports.

Research supports and promotes physical education in schools. "A growing body of evidence suggests a relationship between physical activity and the structure and functioning of the brain. Time spent in physical activity is related to enriched cognitive development and lifelong brain health. In the school setting, active and fit children consistently outperform more inactive, unfit counterparts academically in both the short and long term" (Shape of the Nation, pg. 9). This is just one reason that physical education is so important.
