Curriculum and Assessment

The Community School of SAU #50 incorporates The Creative Curriculum for Preschool as the basis for planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate program for its students. This curriculum is based on decades of child development research and theory and whose core belief is that all children can learn and benefit from developmentally appropriate practice. This means, teaching in ways that match how children develop and learn as they grow.
The Creative Curriculum for Preschool focuses on four areas of child development: Social/Emotional, Physical, Cognitive and Language. Goals for each area include:

Social/Emotional

  • Achieving a sense of self
  • Taking responsibility for self and others
  • Behaving in a pro-social way

Physical

  • Achieving gross motor control
  • Achieving fine motor control

Cognitive

  • Learning and problem solving
  • Thinking logically
  • Representing and thinking symbolically

Language

  • ·Listening and speaking
  • Reading and writing

Our role as teachers:
We are engaged in observing children, guiding their learning and assessing what they have learned. The information that we gain through our observations helps to guide our planning of appropriate learning experiences and helping all children succeed. While there is on going, daily observations of our students, the formal assessment tool we use is Teaching Gold. This assessment is based on the latest research and is fully aligned with the New Hampshire Early Learning Curriculum Guidelines. See document on alignment of Teaching Gold with NH Early Learning Curriculum Guidelines for more information.
